Eames Plastic Chairs

"To offer as much as possible of the best there is for the least amount of money to as large an audience as possible.” That is how Charles and Ray Eames described one of their main goals as furniture designers. None of their other designs came as close to this ideal as the Plastic Chairs. In 1950, the Plastic Armchair (A-shell) and the Plastic Side Chair (S-shell) were introduced to the market, making them the very first industrially produced plastic chairs in the history of furniture manufacturing.  The Eames Plastic Chairs were also the first representatives of a new type of furniture that has become a staple since that time: the multifunctional chair with a seat shell that can be combined with various frames depending on the intended use. Today, Vitra manufactures the comfortable seat shells of the Plastic Side Chair and Plastic Armchair of polypropylene in a wide range of colours and a large variety of upholstery and frames. This allows customers to compose countless combinations, making the chairs suitable for almost any environment: dining rooms, sitting rooms, home offices, workplaces and meeting rooms at companies, restaurants, cafés, canteens, cafeterias, waiting rooms, auditoriums, patios and gardens.
