Oxford

The original version of the Oxford chair was designed for the professors of St. Catherine 's College in Oxford. The extra high backrests of the chair became a symbol of prestige and could be used to define a space within a space. The “professor chair” was later developed into the Oxford series. Despite protests and discussions about the choice of a foreign modernist, Arne Jacobsen received an honorary doctorate in Oxford upon completion of the project. This innovative example of total design is now considered Arne Jacobsen’s best work. The Oxford chair has been revived and once again shares the same look as the original wooden high chair.
