5 tips for smart office design in small spaces

Furnishing a small office space can feel like solving a complex puzzle. How do you integrate everything into the space without it feeling stuffy? The secret is to make use of smart office design and make optimal use of the space to create a productive working environment. Here are a few tips about how to turn a small office space into an inspiring workplace.

  1. Choose multifunctional office furniture
Space is precious, especially in a small office space, and office furniture often takes up the most space. So first differentiate your essential furniture from your “nice to have”, and proceed from there. Choose furniture with multiple functionality and that can be used flexibly. Instead of several individual desks, maybe you can opt for a nice, larger (custom) table. This can be used as both a workplace and a conference table/dining table. You could also choose moveable furniture. This will allow you to easily make changes to the space when necessary.

  2. Work at height for maximum utilisation of the space
A small space can quickly feel messy, so try to keep it neat and tidy at all times. When floor space is limited, make wise use of the vertical space. Wall shelves or tall, narrow cabinets are excellent ways to free up valuable space. Our Matriks shelving system is perfect for this. You can use it to store the strictly necessary items. You will then be able to keep your office organised and tidy.

  3. Play with colour for a more spacious feeling
Colour plays a key role in creating a spatial feeling. Choose light colours on the walls and ceilings. Neutral, calm tones such as white reflect (day)light to create an illusion of a larger space. Nice colour accents in the decoration, such as cushions, plants or art, add a pleasant touch. This will ensure the space gets its own personality without overwhelming it.

  4. Make optimal use of light
Natural daylight is crucial in small offices. Daylight ensures improved concentration and creativity. And a light room looks larger than a dark room. Is the natural daylight in your office rather limited? Opt for strategically placed lighting with the right colour temperature. We are also seeing an increased amount of glass walls nowadays in modern office furnishings. This is often when a small office space is part of a larger space. The glass walls make you more involved with the adjacent space, and it makes the office much brighter.

  5. An eye for details
A small office doesn’t mean you can’t use decoration. Functional elements such as plants, an acoustic wall panel, cushions or unique lighting add a sense of comfort and creativity. But don’t go over the top. An abundance of decoration quickly makes the room look cluttered and smaller.
